Phonics @ Home

First of all it is important to say that it is home learning, not home school. You are not expected to take on the full role of a teacher and it should definitely not be stressful for you or the children!

However, you and your child might enjoy including some phonics into your daily routine. If so, this page is here to help you! If you have any phonics specific questions please feel free to email them to Miss Russell using the Year 1 email adress.  year1@dovecote.school

What is phonics?

Phonics can take a bit of getting used to at first, especially when it isn’t how you were taught when you were at school!

Put simply: Phonics is teaching the sounds that letters make, and how to blend these sounds together make one word.

Here is some information if you'd like to know more about it.

Useful Resources

Sound mats and tricky word lists are grear quick and easy ways to add a bit of phonics practise into your day. You can even keep track of which you can read and write.

Home Learning Activities

There are lots of simple and fun ways that you can do some phonics learning with your child at home. Here are a few ideas of fun games and activities that you could try.

We'd love to see if you try out any of them out! Please send any photos to Miss Russell using the Year 1 email year1@dovecote.school  The activities will be updated so keep checking this page!

Set 1 Sounds

Set 1 Sounds are the first sounds that we teach children. Each sound has a handwriting phrase to help children learn how to write the letters.

Here are some activties you could try with your child to practise reading and writing these.

Set 2 Sounds

Set 2 Sounds are all made up of 'Special Friends', these are when a sound is made by more than one letter.

Set 3 Sounds

With Set 3 Sounds, children learn new ways of writing sounds that they already know, as well as learning some new sounds.

Phonics Play

There are lots of fun games on this website. Children may recognise some of them from playing on them at school! Phonics Play
