What is Lab_13?

Lab_13 is an exciting and unique venture, the first ever dedicated science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) space in Dovecote Primary School, Clifton, Nottingham.

Lab_13 officially opened in April 2009 and is a STEM space for children of ALL ages and abilities (Every Child Matters).  There are no rules about what the children should do as long as it is STEM-related. The children are in control of their own learning experience, giving them more independence and confidence in their own abilities.

Lab_13 allows the pupils to have the freedom and opportunity to explore STEM subjects and to stimulate and satisfy their natural curiosity and creativity. It is a place where the pupils can drop in during school time and are freely allowed to create, invent, design, experiment, research, explore and acquire skills. Lab_13 is a learning space where the children are not governed by the school curriculum; it is a completely separate enterprise within the school.

How Lab_13 is Managed?

Lab_13 is managed by nine Year 4, 5 and 6 children who attend Dovecote Primary School (between the ages of 8-11). The Management Team are responsible for the accounts, replenishing stock, updating the website and replying to emails. They employ an Inventor in residence to help them facilitate their ideas and manage the lab.

All children who attend the primary school (around 400 children, between the ages of 4-11) benefit from Lab_13, as well as teachers, who discover new and innovative ways to teach STEM subjects. Parents have also become more aware of STEM subjects as their children go home and show them the experiments/activities they have undertaken in the lab.
