Big Question: What does 'express yourself' mean? 

This Children’s Mental Health Week we are exploring the different ways we can express ourselves, and the creative ways that we can share our feelings, our thoughts and our ideas.

Watch the video to see if you can spot the different ways people like to express themselves.



How do you like to express yourself? Draw a picture of yourself and some of the things you like to do to express yourself. Talk to your grown ups too, how do they like to express themselves?

Big Question: How does expressing yourself and being creative make you feel?

Finding creative, enjoyable ways to share our thoughts, feelings and ideas can make us feel good and help our mental health, especially when we face tough situations or difficult times.

Some people find drawing or colouring relaxing, it can even help them to feel calm. Try joining in with a step by step drawing video and see how it makes you feel. Or, try playing the squiggle game!

Dress to express!  

Clothes can be a great way to express who you are and how you are feeling. 

Draw, or put on an outfit to express who you are or what you feel. We'd love to see photos!

Big Question: Why does finding healthy ways to expres yourself matter?

Express yourself’ is about finding creative ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through things like art, writing, music, dance and doing things that make you feel good. Re member, being able to express yourself is not about being the best at something or putting on a performance for others. It is about finding a way to show how you are feeling that can help you feel good about yourself.

Big Question: Can we notice how we are feeling?

Recognising how we feel is really important. It is ok to feel all sorts of different emotions. But, it can be useful to make a plan for what to do if you feel cross, angry or frustrated. Watch this clip and see if you can recognise the different emotions.
