Family Maths Challenge 17.07.20

Have fun with some maths games from Gareth Metcalfe's

I See Maths website

http://www.iseemaths.com/maths-games/

Key Stage 1 and 2

A fantastic game for developing addition skills and easy to adapt to increase the challenge!

All you need is some number cards and 2 dice.

Sum turnover

Key Stage 2

A great game for practising multiplication and division recall. Also, you have to think a few moves ahead!

Make your own number grids or you could print out the grids below.

Factors and multiples

Have fun with

Fractions art

This week get creative with this arty maths challenge by exploring

fractions, symmetry and shape all at once.

Fraction art
Fractions art 2
Fractions art 3

Instructions:

1. Draw around some circles and cut them out. Use a lid or container to help. If you haven't got coloured paper, try colouring some white paper yourself before you start.

2. Fold the circles into halves, quarters and eighths.

3. Explore the pieces - Equivalent fractions - how many quarters fit into a half? Can you add and subtract the fractions?

4. Finally create a symmetrical picture or pattern with your fraction pieces.

Do this activity with someone else in your family and talk about what you have discovered. Send in any photos of your work to your teacher or to Mrs Loughran at

year2@dovecote.school

Well done to Jude who had fun testing different numbers and still ended up with zeros - Noughty Numbers!

Jude 1

Well done to Daniel and his family who enjoyed last week's challenge.

They noticed that

'whichever numbers you started with, you always end up with 4  2s and then 4  0s. But it didn't always take the same number of goes.'

Have some fun with this ancient maths strategy game

Nim

This game is similar to a Chinese game 'Jian-Shizi' which means 'picking up stones'. The name comes from the German verb 'nimm' which means 'take'.

Watch the video first. Here is your link, look for the eighth video.

Nim 2(1)

The player who crosses out the last tally loses.

Task : Can you work out how to win every time?

Talk about what you have discovered with your family. Send in any photos or news of what you have noticed to your teacher or Mrs Loughran at

Family Maths Challenge 19.06.20

Here is this week's family challenge from White Rose for you to work on as a team. Remember to have fun. Solve the problems using all you know about representing numbers. Think back to your teacher talking about jottings. Have a try at drawing your own jottings at home if you have some scrap paper. It will help you along each step of the way to solving the problems and then you'll be able to check what you've done. Your teachers and I would love to see any of the work you do so please share some photos with them or Mrs Loughran at

 year2@dovecote.school.

Well done again to Morgan and Lilah. Two very well deserved certificates. Keep up the good work!

Something different this week...

A heart shape maths puzzle

Can you arrange 20 congruent triangles to create a heart shape?

This is a simple STEAM puzzle that gives you the chance to explore shape and use new vocabulary. Can you remember our STEAM festival last September? STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths. There is no 'right' answer so get creative. Your teachers and I would love to see your solutions. Email your photos to Mrs Loughran at year2@dovecote.school

Cut out 20 identical triangles. Draw your own or use the template below.

Have fun turning, flipping and sliding the shapes. Can you explain what you've done using the maths vocabulary below?

Congruent– Shapes that are the same size.

Rotation– Turning a shape around a fixed center point.

Reflection – Flipping a shape over a line of symmetry.

Translation– Sliding a shape up and down or side to side

When you've finished, compare your heart shape with the solution below.

Why not use your final creation as a thank you gift to someone who has been kind to you during this week?

If you would prefer to solve problems like last week's, follow this link to the White Rose homelearning and look for the Friday challenge.

Each Friday there will be a maths challenge for all the family to work on as a team at home. This week's is linked to cooking and baking, one of my favourite links with maths! Maybe you would like to plan to share your delicious creations as part of a celebration for the 75th anniversary of VE day this Friday. We would all love to see any photos of you having fun and enjoying this challenge at home. Please share them with your child's class teacher or Mrs Loughran at year2@dovecote.school.
